Janis Lyn Joplin January 19, 1943 聽鈥 October 4, 1970 was an American singer, songwriter, and music arranger, from Port Arthur, Texas. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. She died in Los Angeles, California of a drug overdose at the age of 27.

Big Brother & the Holding Company is the debut album from Big Brother and the Holding Company and the studio debut of Janis Joplin. The album was originally released in the summer of 1967, following the band s major success at the Monterey Pop Festival. The album was a minor success, peaking at 60 and almost producing a top forty hit with the Joplin song "Down On Me".
